What Is Passive Fire Protection and How Does It Work?

Passive fire protection consists of specialized structural coatings that remain inert until exposed to extreme heat or direct flame. Unlike active fire fighting systems, these protective layers require no human or mechanical triggers to perform. Applied directly to load-bearing steel framing and industrial components, fireproofing mortars and intumescent coatings swell or insulate to insulate materials from critical temperatures, stopping structural failure before emergency response teams arrive.

Under extreme heat, intumescent coatings undergo a controlled chemical expansion, generating a thick insulating char with low thermal conductivity. This protective foam envelope shields the underlying steel profiles, delivering passive fire protection up to 2 hours. Formulated with fast curing properties and verified by UL and FM certifications, our systems maintain structural yield strength during high-temperature scenarios while adhering firmly even in corrosive coastal environments.
